About this role
Red Hat Engineering is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join the Container Tools team with a focus on security management. In this role, you’ll be part of a distributed team and will coordinate work with other engineers, product managers, product owners, scrum masters, and community members to write new features for a rapidly changing container ecosystem. The role involves working in an agile environment on feature enhancements, bug fixes, and test automation. You will help define the architecture of new projects or features, and develop those from inception through to adoption. Expect to write code, review pull requests, fix bugs, update docs, and work with other teams to design complete solutions.
Since container technology is still evolving, it’s not expected that every candidate will come in with the experience required to start submitting pull requests on day one. This is a great opportunity to learn how to work in a fast paced environment. You’ll get to work on many emerging technologies, such as podman, skopeo, sigstore and the efficient and secure distribution of AI models and other artifacts. You will be expected to work autonomously, as documentation for emerging technologies can sometimes be sparse. However, support from team members is always available.
What you will do
- Contribute to adding features requested by stakeholders to containers security libraries to be vendored into products like Podman, Podman Desktop, OpenShift or Kubernetes.
- Participate on a scrum team and complete tasks assigned within sprint boundaries
- Give demos to your peers on work you’ve completed each sprint
- Work with upstream communities like Podman, skopeo, and buildah
- Ensure test plans for the code you create exist and that documentation is correct
- Design and implement automated test cases
- Analyze defects, design solutions, and engineer fixes
- Quickly respond to security threats
What you will bring
- Solid knowledge of Linux (using linux as workstation or server to run applications)
- Experience analysing systems for their security properties
- Understanding of using AI and agents for software development
- Experience with at least one of the following: Golang, Rust
- Experience with Linux containers or Kubernetes
- Good written and verbal English communication skills
The following are considered a plus:
- Knowledgeable about Post Quantum Cryptography
- Knowledgeable about Linux Kernel and kernel modules (GPU support and compilation)
- Knowledge of AI models, container registry services
