Playa del Carmen is a different proposition from Mexico City — beach first, city second, with a small dense nomad scene built around Quinta Avenida and the streets one or two blocks inland. Easy Caribbean swimming, cenotes within scooter range, Tulum and Cozumel as weekend trips. The crowd here skews specific — Playa has long been a base for certain remote-work subcultures (online poker players are a recurring example), especially around specific events and tournaments. Nice mix of beach, holiday vibe, and Mexican food if you're into that, and meaningfully cheaper than Tulum has become. Trade-offs: sargassum seaweed (worst May–August, can ruin the beach), the city is built for tourists so it lacks the cultural depth of CDMX, and hurricane season runs June–November. Timezone is -6h from Zurich (one hour better than CDMX) but still firmly async-only for Swiss workdays.
